NPR’s Guy Raz interviews Know Your Meme Chief Scientist Yatta about the only greatest thing the internet has ever produced: Internet Memes.
From the moment a Carnegie Mellon researcher figured out that a colon and a parenthesis could make a face, the Internet has provided its own unique additions to popular culture. Lolcats, Rickrolling and Star Wars kid are just a few examples of...

This Magic Moment
johncarney:
You know that night, right?
The one where suddenly everything fell into place. You never expected it. It wasn’t supposed to be that type of night. It wasn’t a date. It wasn’t anything, really.
But there you were. Realizing that it was the night. You’d probably never feel like this around someone again. When her arm touched yours, when your arm went around her waist, you thought...

Films of the decade: "The Real Cancun" →
The fact that “The Real Cancun” was shot in only 10 days during March of 2003, concurrent with our country’s invasion of Iraq, makes it one of the more unintentionally brilliant statements of hypocrisy of the decade.

Disney persuaded the new regime to invest about $10 million in computer animation equipment, a seemingly minor decision that proved to be a turning point in the company’s fortunes. Within a few years, the company turned out a remarkable string of animated hits, including “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin” and “The Lion...

As far as the internet is concerned, the lip dubs are more interesting than the original videos. And loads of people are watching the videos, remembering or discovering the bands and associating that experience with fun, positive feelings. Sounds like great marketing for Capitol’s bands to me. I guess they don’t agree.

Lunar Legalism
The upshot, Pop argues, is that the moon is currently a commons: anyone can use it, but nobody can own it or any part of it.
Pop predicts that the commons approach will erode as soon as someone starts digging into the lunar soil for profit. Indeed, he favors this: he suspects the likeliest way for humanity to unlock the value of the moon is via the “frontier” approach. As in the Wild...

I roared with a belly laugh when I read this headline in bed earlier today. Could Capitol Records truly be this misguided? Do they not realize that if you were to sort Internet brands by those most emblematic of creativity — not piracy — that Vimeo would line up at the top? Lip-dubbing is harmless and perfectly fun, and ultimately will define the aesthetic of an Internet...
