Lake Vostok was trapped under 2 miles of ice for somewhere between 15 million and 34 million years. It was reached by Russian scientists in Antarctica on Saturday.
The drill made contact with the lake water at a depth of 12,366 feet. As planned, lake water under pressure rushed up the bore hole 100 to 130 feet pushing drilling fluid up and away from the pristine water, Yelagin said, and forming a frozen plug that will prevent contamination. Next Antarctic season the scientists will return to take samples of the water. The first hint of contact with the lake was Saturday, but it wasn’t until Sunday that pressure sensors showed that the drill had fully entered the lake. Lake Vostok, named after the Russian research station above it, is the largest of more than 280 lakes deep under the miles thick ice that covers most of the Antarctic continent, and the first one to have a drill bit break through to liquid water from the ice that has kept it sealed off from light and air for somewhere between 15 and 34 million years.
There have been much-disputed hints that life might still exist there. If so, that would give a great boost to hopes of finding life in similar conditions in icy water on one of the moons of Jupiter.

“Construction challenges included digging two seven-foot-wide holes 35 feet into bedrock and filling them with concrete and steel to support the cantilevered sections of the five-level, 6,900-square-foot house.”
Industrial Strength House in Pittsburgh, PA.
I love just about everything about this house, although its kinda large. If I didn’t grow up in Pittsburgh, I could probably be happy living there. Please click through and check out the slide-show.
When I see stuff like this, it makes me want to build another structure. I have a tree house in the works, a porch, and an outbuilding.
Great packaging, that, the color, the name, aged 16 years and who is thirsty?
Phone books.
I’m sure the single mother of 3 or forced-retirement postman who delivers these will run this note right up the chain.
But yeah, the time has come. I’m stuck with an AT&T android phone until my contract is up in August. It came chock-full of un-removable apps from AT&T “partners”, and wouldn’t you know the least useful is the Yellow Pages app. It updates itself automatically about once a week, shoving itself in my face like that annoying drunk girl at the bar whose friend is making out with your friend in the corner. This company needs to vanish.

GPOYW - Moustache update.
This is my first time, ever, not shaving. I now know why men love documenting their facial hair. It’s become an on-going joke in our house and has taken a life of it’s own. It’s been 2 months, and it’s still nowhere near where I’d like it.

An FAA budget bill awaiting the president’s signature requires the FAA to open the nation’s airways to drones by Sept. 30, 2015 and provide a plan on how to do that due nine months after the bill passes. From the story:
The FAA is also required under the bill to provide military, commercial and privately-owned drones with expanded access to U.S. airspace currently reserved for manned aircraft by Sept. 30, 2015. That means permitting unmanned drones controlled by remote operators on the ground to fly in the same airspace as airliners, cargo planes, business jets and private aircraft.
Currently, the FAA restricts drone use primarily to segregated blocks of military airspace, border patrols and about 300 public agencies and their private partners. Those public agencies are mainly restricted to flying small unmanned aircraft at low altitudes away from airports and urban centers.
I’m wondering when I’m going to have a “this is the last straw” moment and finally leave the U.S. for good. It feels like it’s coming.
