Let’s Movies

Below you will see brief reviews of the four movies I watched over Thanksgiving break. I suggest you see 1, 2, and 4.

1. Fantastic Mr. Fox - Incredible attention to detail in both visual and sound design, decent writing but don’t go in expecting Life Aquatic or Kicking and Screaming. It is a children’s story after all. The voicing was perfect across the board, in that they were all acted as if they were real people, not overdone like most animation.

2. Moon - Sam Rockwell was incredible as always, this film was written specifically for him and it shows. He was funny and touching and poignant, sometimes all at the same time. The visual effects were beautiful. I’m a sucker for models and physical sets, and this film proved that when done correctly, that’s still far superior to CG at this point in time.

3. Paranormal Activity - This made me jump a few times, and from a production standpoint it was fun to try to figure out how they accomplished a few of the effects. But the story was incredibly weak and cheesy, and the acting was the worst I’ve seen since Blair Witch, an obvious inspiration for this film in both style and content.

4. Lost Horizon - Haven’t finished this one yet, but so far I love it. I’m a sucker for Capra, and a sucker for white people playing Asian people in the old films. So strange and funny and uncomfortable at the same time. Also, the visual effects are very impressive for 1937.
